Gallium oxide (Ga2O3), also known as gallium(III) oxide or gallium trioxide, appears in all its polymorphs as a white solid. Gallium oxide is usually prepared by neutralizing gallium salts with an appropriate acidic or basic solution.
Applications
While it lacks direct commercial applications, it plays a key role in the production of high purity gallium, which in turn plays a key role in the production of the vitally important semiconducting material gallium arsenide. It’s also a subject of research in a number of fields, which may result in additional commercial applications.
- Gallium purification. The primary application of gallium oxide is the purification of elemental gallium. High purity elemental gallium is a necessary component in the production of gallium arsenide, a semiconductor which makes up roughly 95% of all gallium usage globally.
- Light. A significant amount of ongoing research into gallium oxide relates to light production. It has potential value in the manufacture of lasers, luminescent materials, and phosphors.
- Electronics. Similar to its potential in light-emission technologies, researchers see value in gallium oxide in a number of specialized electronics applications. It has been used to produce dielectric coatings for solar cells and has been researched as a potential material in deep-ultraviolet transparent conductive oxides.
AHP Materials offers gallium oxide at 99.999% and 99.9999% purity. Contact us today to learn more about these standard products, or to ask about custom orders.
