Cadmium selenide is a red or red-black inorganic compound derived from cadmium and selenium. Also known as cadmium(II) selenide or cadmium(2+) selenide, this compound is notable for its semiconducting properties. Cadmium selenide comes in three distinct crystalline structures: wurzite, sphalerite, and rock-salt, with sphalerite samples converting to wurtzite when heated and rock-salt structures appearing only under high pressure.

Applications

Cadmium selenide is primarily of interest today for it’s potential as a nanopowder. While earlier applications exist and continue to utilize this material, most modern research focuses on the potential of CdSe nanoparticles.

  • Nanoscience. Cadmium selenide is of exceptional interest as a nanoparticle due to a property called quantum confinement, in which electrons of the material are confined to a small volume. Because this property is size-dependent, cadmium selenide nanoparticles can be altered based on size. This makes cadmium selenide a common material for quantum dots.
  • Luminescence. Cadmium selenide is highly luminescent, a trait which is exploited in some forms of lighting and imaging.
  • Photoresistors. Cadmium has seen limited use in photoresistors, thanks to its natural transparency to infra-red light.
  • IR instrumentation. As with its use in photoresistors, cadmium selenide is sometimes used to create lenses for IR-based instruments, allowing infrared light to pass through while blocking other light.

AHP Materials offers cadmium selenide at 99.999% purity as part of our standard catalog. To inquire about other preparations, contact us today about custom orders.
