Bismuth selenide
A dull grey solid, bismuth selenide (Bi2Se3) is a compound of bismuth and selenium. The material is alternatively known as bismuth(III) selenide, selanoxobismuth, or selanylidenebismuth.
Applications
High purity bismuth selenide is of interest for its properties as a semiconductor and thermoelectrical material, with
- Thermoelectrical materials. Researches have created a number of thermoelectric bismuth selenide films with valueable thermoelectric properties, for use in solar cells and related applications.
- Semiconductors. Bismuth selenide is a semiconductor, and is used in several semiconductor alloys. Of note is the way stoichiometric Bi2Se3 often fails to act as a semiconductor due to naturally occurring selenium vacancies.
- Thin films. Bismuth selenide has been used to create thin films of value in solar cell development, owing to the unique tunable band gap of the compound.
- Topological insulation research. Research on bismuth selenide has revealed topologically protected surface states, making the compound the subject of ongoing research into topological insulation.
- Nanomaterial research. Bismuth selenide nanoparticles may have far greater applications than bismuth at normal scales, according to early research.
- Biomedicine. High purity Bismuth selenide nanoparticles are being researched as potential tools in disease diagnosis and other biomedical applications.
AHP Materials offers bismuth selenide at 99.999% purity as a standard product, with other purities and preparations available through custom orders. Contact us today to learn more.
