Aluminum chloride hexahydrate 99.9999% AlCl36H2O
The hydrated form of aluminum chloride, aluminum chloride hexahydrate is a white solid in its purest form, though it is frequently seen with a yellow coloration due to frequent contamination with iron chlorides. Unlike anhydrous aluminum chloride, aluminum chloride hexahydrate cannot be used as a Lewis acid due to its unique structure. Care should be taken with this material, as it can be
Applications
- Antiperspirant. The most common use of the hexahydrate form of aluminum chloride, topical antiperspirants based on aluminum chloride hexahydrate work on the cells which produce sweat, closing them. Metal ions in the compound interact with polysaccharides in the skin to damage skin cells and form a blockage of sweat gland ducts, which heals with the renewal of skin in the area.
- Cosmetics. Many cosmetics include a small amount of aluminum chloride hexahydrate for its antiperspirant properties.
- Water purification. Aluminum chloride hexahydrate is frequently used in industrial water treatment as a coagulant.
- Medication. Used in the treatment of illnesses related to or characterized by excess perspiration, such as hyperhidrosis. Essentially used at higher concentrations than typical antiperspirant or cosmetics to deal with unusual sweating.
